What Makes Coaching Unique?

Coaching, for life and corporate advancement, is one of the hottest self-improvement trends.  Some great success stories have been told and coaching is becoming recognized as one of the most powerful personal and professional tools for sustaining success.  Yet, many are still asking questions about whether it is a new form of therapy or a new look to consulting, training or mentoring.  The truth is, coaching differs significantly from these other professions and fields.

Let's take a look at each.

Coaching vs. Therapy
There is a common heritage between coaching and therapy, but the differences are large, starting with perspective.

Coaching vs. Consulting
Think in terms of expertise:  someone who is an expert in the process of helping you more toward your goals, vs. someone who is an expert in doing a particular task.

Coaching vs. Training
Coaching focuses on what you want to be supported in doing, whereas training focuses on a predetermined body of knowledge

Coaching vs. Mentoring
Having a mentor can be a great experience, someone who "shows you the ropes."  Coaching also is a great experience, having someone show you that you can figure which rope you want to use and how other ropes might be found.
